These are Some Basic Eye Care Tips

putting contact lensEnsuring you have healthy eyesight is one of the most vital things you can do to maintain your good quality of life. At Erim Eye Care, we want to help you protect your eyesight today. If you are already wearing glasses or contact lenses, we want to help you protect them against further damage.

Here are some basic eye care tips that you should follow:

  • Research your family history. If your eyesight isn’t compromised yet, make sure you still do research into your family history. Do you or any of your family have a history of high blood pressure or suffer from diabetes? Are you beyond the age of 65? Do your parents, siblings, uncles, aunts, or cousins wear glasses? Any of these traits can increase your risk of sight-threatening eye problems.
  • Eat healthy. A healthy diet can lead to healthy eyesight as well. Nutrients like lutein, zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins C and E can help prevent age-related vision problems like cataracts and macular degeneration. Some foods that you should start eating include:
    • Green leafy vegetables like kale, spinach, and other vegetables, especially carrots
    • Oysters and pork
    • Oranges and some other citrus fruits
    • Salmon, tuna, and some other oily fish
  • Protect your eyes against harmful UV light. When you are outdoors during the daytime, always wear sunglasses or some other safety eyewear that can help shield your eyes against the harmful UV lights of the sun.
  • Observe proper glasses or contact lens care. Strictly follow our instructions when it comes to the care and use of your eyeglasses or contact lenses. Getting scratches in your glasses, sleeping in contacts, and using expired solutions to clean your contacts, are just some situations that can further damage your eyesight.

  • Be conscious of eye fatigue. If you are constantly working with computers or reading books, make sure that you are conscious of eye fatigue. If you can feel your eyes straining, follow the 20-20-20 rule. This means you have to look away from your work every 20 minutes at an item 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

If you are experiencing eye fatigue or vision problems and it persists, or if it seems to be worsening, make sure to set an appointment with Erim Eye Care immediately. However, if you still have 20/20 eyesight and want to keep it that way, follow the above-mentioned tips.
